How to withdraw Upwork earnings to India
Your Upwork balance is only worth what finally reaches your bank account, and three separate costs sit between the two. Most freelancers watch the visible withdrawal fee and miss the larger one, which is the exchange rate used when dollars turn into rupees.
The three costs on every payout
- Upwork's service fee: a flat 10% taken from each payment before it reaches your balance, and no withdrawal method changes it.
- The withdrawal fee: Upwork's Direct to Local Bank option costs $0.99 per withdrawal and, by Upwork's own help page, usually arrives within four days once the method is active.
- The conversion: when Upwork or its payment partner converts dollars to INR, the rate carries a markup over mid-market, and that markup is never a line item. The USD to INR forex guide explains how to measure it.
Your withdrawal options
| Method | How it works | Where conversion happens | Proof of payment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct to Local Bank (INR) | Upwork converts and credits your Indian account | Upwork's payment partner, with a markup | Ask your bank. Some banks decline a FIRA when the credit arrives in INR |
| USD wire | SWIFT transfer to your bank | Your bank, on receipt | Bank issues the FIRA, often for a fee |
| PayPal or Payoneer | Funds go to a wallet, then to your bank | The wallet provider | The provider's own statements |
| USD account with DashX | You add the account details as your US bank in Upwork | DashX, at the mid-market rate with a 0.35% fee | FIRA on every payment |
The wire route has its own fee stack, which the SWIFT transfers guide breaks down, and the USD payment methods comparison shows the numbers on a $10,000 invoice.
What a $1,000 withdrawal can cost
Assume a 2% conversion markup, a round figure since real markups change by provider and by day. Direct to Local Bank costs about $21, made up of $0.99 for the withdrawal and about $20 inside the exchange rate. The same $1,000 through a DashX USD account costs $3.50 at 0.35%. Upwork lists its US bank option as free, but check the fee on your own withdrawal page before you decide.
How to switch your payout
- Match the names: the name on your bank or DashX account must match your verified name on Upwork. Mismatches are the common reason for rejected withdrawals.
- Add the method: in Upwork, open account settings, go to Withdrawals, add a new method using the US bank option with your DashX USD account details.
- Pick a schedule: if you stay on a method with a fixed fee, withdraw less often so the fee spreads over a larger amount.
- File the FIRA: save each one next to the invoice it belongs to.
The paperwork that follows the money
Upwork does not issue a FIRA. The document comes from your bank or payout provider and carries the purpose code for your kind of work. The guides on what a FIRA is, FIRA versus FIRC and RBI purpose codes cover what to ask for. If you are registered for GST, read the note on GST and LUT for Fiverr and Upwork freelancers. If you are not, the Section 44ADA guide shows how this income is taxed.
DashX operates through RBI-authorised AD Category I banks (JP Morgan and HDFC) and PA-CB licensed partners. Open a USD account and start receiving. Try DashX.
