What are virtual bank accounts? Explained for freelancers
A virtual account gives your overseas client a local bank account to pay into, in their own currency, in their own country. The client pays a domestic transfer. You receive INR in your Indian bank account. No SWIFT wire, no intermediary bank, no spread on the exchange rate.
If you have ever lost $40 to a wire fee and another 2% to your bank's exchange rate on a single invoice, this is the fix.
What is a virtual account?
A virtual account is a set of account details, such as an account number and routing code, issued for you by a licensed payment partner in another country. It is linked to a real underlying account held by that partner. Money sent to your virtual account details is tagged to you, converted to INR, and settled into your own bank account in India.
It is not a foreign bank account you open yourself. You do not hold a balance in it. It is a receiving address.
What your client sees
A US client sees a US account number and routing number. A European client sees an IBAN. A UK client sees a sort code and account number. They pay it the same way they pay a local vendor. No international wire form, no SWIFT code, no correspondent bank charges on their side.
How it works
- You share your account details: USD, EUR, GBP or AED, depending on where your client is.
- Your client pays a local transfer: ACH or wire in the US, SEPA in Europe, Faster Payments in the UK, a local transfer in the UAE.
- The payment lands with the licensed partner: tagged to your account.
- It converts at the mid-market rate: one flat fee, no spread.
- INR settles into your Indian bank account: through an RBI-authorised AD bank, within 24 hours on business days.
- Your FIRA is issued: automatically, for every payment.
Virtual account vs SWIFT wire
| SWIFT wire | Virtual account | |
|---|---|---|
| What the client does | Fills an international wire form with your SWIFT code | Pays a local transfer |
| Client's bank fee | $25 to $50 | Usually nothing |
| Intermediary bank fee | $15 to $30, deducted before it reaches you | None |
| Exchange rate | Your bank's rate, usually 1.5% to 2.5% below mid-market | Mid-market |
| Time to INR | 2 to 5 business days | Within 24 hours once received |
| FIRA | On request, sometimes charged | Automatic |
DashX issues virtual account in 10+ currencies
Here’s a list of top currencies:
- USD: for clients in the US and anyone who bills in dollars.
- EUR: for clients anywhere in the SEPA zone.
- GBP: for UK clients.
- AED: for clients in the UAE, which is a large and underserved market for Indian freelancers.
Is it FEMA compliant?
Yes. Under the Foreign Exchange Management Act, foreign payments must enter India through authorised banking channels. A virtual account through a PA-CB licensed partner, settling through an AD Category I bank, is one of those channels.
What that means in practice
- The payment is reported to the RBI: by the AD bank, the same as a wire.
- A purpose code is assigned: P0802 for software, P1006 for consulting, P1007 for marketing, and so on.
- A FIRA is issued: the document your CA and your bank need, and the one that now matters for the monthly Export Declaration Form.
- The money reaches your own account: not a wallet, not a balance held by a platform.
What it costs
One flat fee of 0.35% on the conversion, at the mid-market rate. No account opening fee, no monthly fee, no charge per FIRA.
Worked example, say your US client pays a $3,000 invoice. Mid-market rate is ₹95.
| SWIFT wire | DashX virtual account | |
|---|---|---|
| Client sends | $3,000 | $3,000 |
| Client's bank fee | $35 | $0 |
| Intermediary fee | $20 | $0 |
| Arrives at your bank | $2,945 | $3,000 |
| Rate applied | ₹93.10 | ₹95.00 |
| Fee | Included in the rate | 0.35% (₹997.50) |
| You receive | ₹2,74,179 | ₹2,84,002.50 |
That is ₹9,823 more on one invoice. On ten invoices a year it is close to a lakh.
Questions freelancers ask
Is the account in my name?
The account details are issued for you and tagged to your account. Payments sent to them reach you. Your client will see DashX's partner on their end, and your name on the invoice. If a client needs your name on the FIRA for their records, DashX offers Premium Priority Rails for that.
Can I hold USD in it?
No. DashX is built for receiving. Payments convert to INR and settle into your Indian bank account. If you want to hold foreign currency, that is a different product, and the rules around it are different.
Can I send money out?
No. DashX is receive-only.
What if my client pays the wrong amount or reference?
The payment is still tagged to your account details, so it reaches you. Your dashboard shows it, and you match it to the invoice.
Does my client pay anything?
Nothing to DashX. A local transfer usually costs them nothing either. That alone makes some clients happier to pay on time.
