Good to know
HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) codes classify goods. The first two digits are the chapter, the next two the heading, and further digits narrow it down. In India, customs uses 8-digit codes; GST invoices need at least 4 or 6 digits depending on turnover.
SAC (Services Accounting Code) is India's 6-digit classification for services. Every SAC code starts with 99. Software development, for example, is 998314: IT design and development services.

Where you need it
Put the code on every export invoice, your Letter of Undertaking (LUT) for zero-rated exports, and the Export Declaration Form your bank asks for. For GST rates and the full 8-digit tariff, check the CBIC tariff or ask your CA, since rates change with GST Council notifications.
